The Department has been involved in teaching of MBBS, BDS, BSc(Nursing) students.
BDS classes were started in 1984, while BSc (Hons) Nursing course commenced in 1999. In the past in service MLT students have been trained in the Department. Various Batches of MLT students of other institutes have also received 6-8 weeks of practical training in Microbiology. A number of students have finished their PhD programme in the subject.
MBBS Course
The objectives are developed to foster the development of an ‘Indian Medical Graduate’ possessing requisite knowledge, skills and values with regard to infectious diseases as outlined in Competency Based Medical Education curriculum of National Medical Commission (https://www.nmc.org.in/information-desk/for-colleges/ug-curriculum). The students are taught with a variety of teaching learning methods such as lectures, small group discussions, DOAP sessions and self-directed learning modules. Overall Learning Objectives for the undergraduate learner in Microbiology:
- An understanding of role of microbial agents in health and disease.
- An understanding of the immunological mechanisms in health and disease.
- Ability to correlate the natural history, mechanisms and clinical manifestations of infectious diseases as they relate to the properties of microbial agents.
- Knowledge of the principles and application of infection control measures.
- An understanding of the basis of choice of laboratory diagnostic tests and their interpretation, antimicrobial therapy, control and prevention of infectious diseases.
MD Course
Ten postgraduate students are enrolled in the department every year. During their 3-year stay in the department, they are involved in learning various laboratory techniques in Clinical Microbiology, interpretation of laboratory results and correlation of laboratory results with clinical findings. The students undertake thesis work under the guidance of the faculty members, which equips them to develop a scientific temper. They are trained in infection control procedures, medical education technology and research methodology.
