Departmental information

The Department of Microbiology at Maulana Azad Medical College is at the forefront of teaching the principle and art of Clinical Microbiology to the Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Ph.D students. Although all the faculty members are proficient in the field of Clinical Microbiology, each has a core area(s) of interest on which he/she conducts research. The Laboratories in the Department are well equipped with latest equipment. The department was awarded Fleming Trophy for research in 2020.

History

The Department of Microbiology, to begin with, functioned as an integral part of the Department of Pathology in providing diagnostic services to the hospital. It was located in the Hospital premises in 1950s and shifted to the Ground floor of Pathology block of Maulana Azad Medical College, in 1960-61. It got formally separated and established as an independent department in the year1963.

The Department has come a long way from its inception as a part of Pathology department way back in 1959, occupying just a few rooms on ground floor, Pathology block to a full fledged independent Department with its multiple Laboratories along with a well-equipped Practical Hall on third floor for undergraduate Practical classes.

The Department has been awarded Fleming’s Trophy in recognition of research work almost 20 times over the years, nearly every alternate year. Lately the Fleming’s Trophy was awarded to department for outstanding research work in 2020.

Many Best Thesis awards have been bagged by Post graduate students with the first award as early as 1963 to the first postgraduate in the department, late Dr A. Varghese. Several faculty members have been awarded short term and long term WHO and Common Wealth fellowships for advanced training in both National and International Centers.
